Eco-Friendly Gifts: The Story Behind Our Premium Organic Toiletries Gift Set For Him

· · Comments

If you've ever been shopping for toiletries gift sets, you will know most of them have on thing in common: They are all filled with plastic.

Our 'Premium Organic Toiletries Set For Him' has minimal plastic in some items, as well as most items having no plastic content at all.

In this blog, we're going to talk about why we were motivated to create a replacement for conventional plastic filled toiletries sets, and the data behind the effects of plastic on our planet.

Why Did We Develop This Eco-Friendly Gift?

Whether we were shopping online, or looking on the high street for toiletries gift sets, we found it exceptionally difficult to find any that didn't revolve around plastic - both in the cosmetics themselves, and in the product packaging.

We thought we couldn't be on the only ones interested in Eco-Friendly Toiletries, so we talked it out with a few friends.

As with us, they also really wanted plastic free toiletries, but found it so hard to find any. As well as being environmentally friendly, they also wanted the products to be luxury.

This way, they could give an amazing, unique gift, but also be sustainable in doing so.

From that point, we decided to develop a toiletries gift set that contained all of the essential items needed for self care.

However, this gift set would be different. Where possible, we would find alternatives made by sustainable, independent producers who used organic raw materials.

Suppliers who packed their environmentally friendly cosmetics into beautiful minimalist, plastic free packaging. This was our goal, and we found some amazing creators along the way.

What Does This Eco-Friendly Gift Contain?

This Eco-Friendly Toiletries Gift Set has been created for a more male audience.

Containing the essentials, it has some fantastic plastic free alternatives to traditional cosmetics.

  • Sustainable Bamboo Toothbrush (Produced by Hydrophil).
  • Eco-friendly Pure Mint Toothpaste (Produced by Hydrophil)
  • A Pair of Organic Deodorant Sticks (Produced by Kutis)
  • Organic Peppermint Shampoo Bar (Produced by Mersea Mudd Shack)
  • Premium Organic Perfume (Produced by Fiilit)

Sustainable Bamboo Toothbrushes

The Sustainable Bamboo Toothbrushes are produced by Hydrophil.

They make elegant, plastic free toothbrushes. For the handle, Moso Bamboo is used. This specific type of Bamboo can grow up to 20 metres in only two years.

This is without the influence of fertilizers, pesticides or any artificial irrigation.

The special thing about Moso Bamboo is that when harvested, it does not die. In fact, when the mature plants are harvested it actually increases the overall yield of the plantation.

This fact also means that there is no deforestation, which is key in our fight against climate change.

This is due to plants actively taking in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This CO2 is then converted into carbon, where it is stored in the plants as well as in the surrounding soil.

When forests are burned due to deforestation, all this carbon stored in the trees and plants being destroyed is released into the atmosphere.

From 2015 - 2017, the destruction of tropical rainforests released 4.8 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. This means that the amount of CO2 emissions produced from deforestation totalled up to 10% of all human related CO2 emissions.

This is why Moso Bamboo is so great. As they are harvested responsibly, all solid Moso Bamboo products are CO2 neutral or better, from cradle to grave.

Eco-Friendly Pure Mint Toothpaste

Another item from Hydrophil, this Toothpaste is the perfect partner for the Sustainable Bamboo Toothbrush.

With the tube being produced from 95% Spruce Wood, the toothpaste makes an excellent eco-friendly alternative to standard toothpaste.

In comparison to standard toothpaste tubes, which are produced from polyethylene (PE), Hydrophil toothpaste tubes have a 40% lower carbon footprint.

Even though that's already amazing, they decided to go one step further. They offset the remaining carbon footprint, which means the toothpaste is fully carbon neutral.

The spruce wood is largely sourced from recycled sawmill dust from joineries, which shows the great initiative they have in reducing waste as a whole.

The toothpaste itself contains no microplastics, silicone or parabens.

Parabens are a group of synthetic compounds that have been linked to hormone disruption, amongst other health conditions.

Silicones are another group of synthetic compounds which have been linked to endocrine disruption.

Microplastics have been linked to numerous health issues, but the effects of microplastics in humans is not fully understood yet.

Microplastics are pieces of plastic that are less 5 mm in all dimensions.

They can be far smaller, to the point where they can't be seen with the human eye. Below 100 nanometers, plastic particles are known as nanoplastics.

They can be formed either primarily, or secondarily. Primary microplastics are created below 5 mm in size. Common examples of primary microplastics include microfibres in clothing, microbeads and plastic pellets.

Secondary microplastics are formed from pieces of plastic above 5 mm in all dimensions breaking down, until pieces below 5 mm are formed.

Secondary microplastics can be formed from essentially all plastics that break down. Think of plastic water bottles, plastic cups and plastic wrapping.

Organic Deodorant Sticks

Our Natural Deodorant comes from Kutis. An independent producer in based in the beautiful rural heart of Wales, they get inspiration from the natural environment that surrounds them every day.

Each Deodorant Stick is packed in cardboard tubing, which means no plastic is used to package the Deodorant.

Single use plastic pollution is a huge problem, and much of it is derived from the cosmetics industry.

We love what Kutis do, because they are standing up and creating products that do not harm the environment when they are used up.

Organic Peppermint Shampoo Bar

In 2018, the beauty and cosmetics industry generated a huge 142 billion units of packaging. Most of this ended up in the ocean, where it will have a devastating effect on the marine environment.

Mersea Mudd Shack produce our amazing Peppermint Shampoo Bars, and they stand up to this single use plastic pollution from the cosmetics industry.

Using beautiful, minimalist packaging, they prioritise the environment, and work with it to create their products.

Our Peppermint Shampoo Bar is no different. Using organic, natural ingredients, their Shampoo Bar is a fantastic alternative to high street shampoos.

As well as being sustainable, they are a luxury treat for your hair.

In the marine environment, plastic debris can be lethal to marine creatures. Turtles who come into contact with plastic have a 22% chance of dying from ingesting it. This number rises to 50% when turtles come into contact with 14 pieces of plastic.

Other marine predators, including many seabirds, are also at risk from ingesting plastic debris. This is due to a recently discovered fact: plastic debris smells like food to marine predators.

This is because of the DMS created by algae.

Dimethyl Sulfide, or DMS, is generated by algae naturally in the ocean. Krill feed off these algae, and marine predators including many sea birds hunt krill.

Unfortunately, plastic debris is a fantastic breeding ground for algae.

This means that surrounding plastic debris are huge amounts of krill. Marine predators have learned that the smelly odor from DMS, correctly means that there will be large amounts of krill present.

So when marine predators smell DMS, they hunt in that area. This often means they are inadvertently ingesting plastic debris, when they are in fact hunting for Krill.

Producers like Mersea Mudd Shack produce their products to be in sync with the environment, and not cause negative impacts on the natural world.

We love what they do, and they at the forefront of many of our Gifts because of it.

Premium Organic Perfume

To finish our Toiletries Set For Him, we have sourced Luxury Perfume from Fiilit. As a company, they agree with many of the values already expressed in this blog - they are a perfect fit for our gifts!

One of our key values that is not mentioned as much, and one that we share with many of our producers including Fiilit, is developing products without animal testing.

Unfortunately, it is still legal in many countries around the world. Fiilit never has, and never will, test their perfumes on animals.

Fiilit's Organic Perfumes are also completely free of petrochemical materials. As an industry, Petrochemicals are the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

Between 2030 and 2050, greenhouse gas emissions would increase by 20% and 30% respectively.

This ever increasing level of emissions is contributing to the climate crisis we face.

As with many global problems, it will sadly be the poorest who are hit. Developing countries that don't have the infrastructure to deal with climate change influenced natural disasters, will be damaged even more with the increasing severity of storms.

In Conclusion

We hope we've given you a detailed rundown of our Premium Organic Toiletries Set For Him, and our motivations behind creating it.

With each item, we've given a detailed layout of exactly why we've chosen it to be in this gift, and the data behind the decision.
